Light Sources

Hansatech Instruments light sources have been designed to accompany the range of oxygen electrode chambers and control units in order to allow optimum performance and repeatability of measurements of photosynthesis and respiration. Light sources are positioned either directly or connected via fibre-optic cables to optical ports on the electrode chambers ensuring optimum sample illumination.

Hansatech Instruments LED light sources provide red illumination centered on 650nm with an HBW (Half Band Width) of ± 25nm which is automatically controlled via the Oxylab+ control unit. LED’s have the advantage of low heat output, rugged construction, long life, intensity adjustment without the need for optical filters and a fast rise to full intensity (milliseconds) negating the need for electronic shutters in fast fluorescence work.

The LS2 high intensity white light source contains a cooling fan, infra-red reducing “Hot mirror” and optics to provide light with minimum variation of intensity across the beam and little divergence from parallel. Automatic intensity control is not possible with the LS2. Attenuation of the light intensity is achieved by placing combinations of neutral density filters across the beam.

LED1 Light Source

A LED1 high-intensity light source in one of three colours is supplied with the Chlorolab 2+ system. The different light sources that can be supplied are as follows:

LED1/R: red LED with a peak wavelength of 627nm
LED1/B: blue LED with a peak wavelength of 470nm
LED1/W: white LED with a colour temperature of 4100K

The graph below shows the spectral output of each colour of the LED1 light source.

Light intensity adjustments are made automatically based on user-defined PFD tables within OxyTrace+ software. PFD tables consist of up to 20 individual steps allowing complex light response assays to be configured for automatic execution during a measurement.

Each of the LED1 light sources provide a maximum intensity of up to 2,000 µmol m-2 s-1 in DW2/2. Greater intensities are achievable by purchasing additional LED1 housings and an adapter which allows simultaneous automatic control of up to 3 LED1 light units.

Overview

The LH36/2R light housing is designed specifically for use with the DW3 chamber. The light housing mounts directly on to the larger optical port of the DW3 and is held securely in place.

The large-area LED array consists of 36 red LEDs arranged in such a way to provide a high uniformity of illumination of laminar samples suspended in the square section chamber of the DW3.

LH36/2R connects directly to the rear of the Oxylab+ electrode control unit. Light intensity adjustments are made automatically based on user-defined PFD tables within OxyTrace+ software. PFD tables consist of up to 20 individual steps allowing complex light response assays to be configured for automatic execution during a measurement.

The LH36/2R has an integral cooling fan which automatically switches on to cool the housing when the light intensity reaches a certain point. This provides stability control of the light intensity when required at higher light intensity steps. Optical feedback controls within the light housing serves to enhance the stability of the LH36/2R performance across the entire range of intensity.

The graph below shows the spectral output of the LH36/2R light source.

Overview

The LS2 light source is a high-intensity (100W) tungsten-halogen light source which is powered from a stabilised power supply.

The lamp housing contains a cooling fan, infrared reducing “Hot-Mirror” and optics to provide light with minimum variation of intensity across the beam and little divergence from parallel. 2 slots are provided to accept 50mm square optical filters or a manual shutter-plate.

A range of light intensity steps may be achieved by adding permutations of the 4 A5 neutral density filters supplied (0.1,0.3,0.6 and 1.0 O.D.) to attenuate the light intensity. Maximum sample illumination intensities vary depending on the type of electrode chamber in use.

When used with the DW1 electrode chamber the LS2 can achieve a maximum intensity of 1,800 µmol m-2 s-1 when mounted horizontally with respect to the electrode chamber.
